Central Tech inducted 162 students into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) during ceremonies in April and May at both the Drumright and Sapulpa campuses. This year Central Tech is delighted to have two recipients of the prestigious Jon H. Poteat Scholarship. Nathaniel Adamson of Sapulpa and Elizabeth Meridith of Mannford were two of 225 outstanding NTHS members chosen to receive the $1,000 scholarship.

Central Tech Cosmetology Instructor Monica Frick was awarded Oklahoma SkillsUSA North Central District Advisor of the Year for 2016-2017, on February 24, 2017, at the North Central District Spring Leadership Conference in recognition of exemplary service and leadership to students of SkillsUSA Oklahoma. Frick’s work with the Action Skills Contest on the national level has impacted hundreds of students over the years and her care and compassion for students at all learning levels is a model for advisors to follow. Central Tech is proud of Frick and congratulates her for receiving this prestigious award.

A Cleveland High School student and the son of a carpentry instructor at the nearby technology center. Mike Vaughan didn’t choose the same career path as his father, but he did sign up for classes at Central Technology Center, where his father taught. He chose the offset printing program and quickly became one of instructor Danny Hoggatt’s favorite students. He graduated from what is now the digital printing and imaging communication program in 1981 and went to work for Pennwell Printing and Publishing.

By removing a few walls and repositioning them, a new classroom, 1,500 square feet of shop space, instructor’s office, tool room/vault for the use in emergency situations, and a student locker room were added.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and represents areas where Oklahoma doesn’t have enough skilled workers to meet the demand across the state causing a skills gap. There are approximately 6,000 STEM job openings a year in Oklahoma, and even though there are approximately 6,000 graduates a year, almost half leave the state or take a job outside the studied field, according to the Oklahoma STEM Foundation.

The weather on Monday, September 21 was perfect for a day on the links. The Ninth Annual Central Tech Foundation Ron Vandever Memorial Golf Tournament, held at the Buffalo Rock Golf & Gun Club in Cushing, brought out 151 golfers to help raise money for the Central Tech Foundation.

SpiritBank sponsored this year’s tournament with a great response from 44 business and community sponsors at the platinum, gold, silver and bronze levels.

Oklahoma students have more options now for gaining math and science academic credits on their high school transcripts.

The Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education recently received approval to count several Project Lead The Way courses as math and science academic credits in the Achieving Classroom Excellence College Preparatory/Work Ready Curriculum and the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship program.

Central Tech's Cosmetology class visits pre-kindergarten and head start students of Bradley Elementary in Drumright, Okla. once a month as part of the community service project, Make a Child Feel Special, through the SkillsUSA chapter.

Each Central Tech cosmetology student is paired with a Bradley student for the entire year and work on projects including art, reading, math, coloring, and visiting with the students.

Central Tech Superintendent Announces Retirement

Central Tech Superintendent Phil Waul announced his retirement Tuesday night at the monthly board of education meeting. On June 30, Waul plans to leave the district he has led since 1998.

In a letter to the board, Waul said it was an honor and privilege to serve the board of education as superintendent for the past 17 years. “I have experienced an unbelievable career at Central Tech filled with exciting opportunities, wonderful experiences and life-long friendships. The time is right for me to retire.”

Central Tech Board of Education members voted unanimously Tuesday, March 10, 2015, to approve a major exterior renovation for the main building on the Sapulpa campus.

Pipeline Simulator Opens at Central Tech

Pipeline companies and contractors can now complete specific Operator Qualification (OQ) training using Central Tech’s new simulated pipeline terminal located within the Pipeline and Safety Center on the Drumright campus.

In July 1967, the Central Oklahoma Area Vocational Technical School Board of Education held their first meeting, and in August of 1968, citizens in the Central Vo-Tech school district approved a $935,000 bond issue for construction and equipping the original building in Drumright.

Students Complete Central Tech's First Pharmacy Class

This month, Central Tech honored the first completers of the adult Pharmacy Technician class. These students began this program in March of 2013 and finished in August, 2013. They were honored with a cake and punch reception on Wednesday, August 7th. Each student completed 165 hours of customized training, which included 30 hours of instruction in pharmacy-math concepts, calculations and conversions; 75 hours of instruction in drug classes and interactions, basic physiology, daily pharmacy operations and exam prep, and 60 hours or more of on-the-job training in an area pharmacy.

Central Technology Center’s FIRST Robotics team, registered as Storm #2389, qualified for the FIRST Robotics Championship after allying with two teams and winning both of its final matches on March 30 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, OK taking first place at regional competition.

This year’s competition required students to build a robot in 6 weeks from a common kit of parts provided by FIRST. Students knew the offensive and defensive objectives for the robot, but had to devise a concept, design the robot, problem solve and trouble shoot.

The Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE) named Diana Plummer, Central Tech’s Career Counselor, the National Career and Technical Education Educator of the Year for 2013. The Educator of the Year award honors career and technical educators, other than full-time teaches, who have provided significant contributions to professional associations and career and technical education (CTE) programs for youth and/or adults in their fields, communities and/or states.

Central Tech Foundation Golf Tournament Raises more than $17,500

Last year, the foundation provided 55 scholarships to students enabling them to continue their education.

The weather on Monday, September 24 was perfect for a day on the links. The 6th Annual Central Tech Foundation, Ron Vandever Memorial Golf Tournament, held at the Cushing Country Club, brought out 164 golfers helping to raise money for the foundation.

Central Tech Earns 22nd Gold Star

Central Tech has received the Gold Star of Excellence Award more than any other technology center in Oklahoma.

Central Tech earned its 22nd consecutive Gold Star of Excellence Award at this year’s Annual CareerTech Summer Conference in Oklahoma City, August 2-3. Central Technology Center is the only technology center in the state of Oklahoma to receive the Gold Star of Excellence award every year since the award began in 1990.
