Pipeline Simulator Opens at Central Tech

Pipeline companies and contractors can now complete specific Operator Qualification (OQ) training using Central Tech’s new simulated pipeline terminal located within the Pipeline and Safety Center on the Drumright campus.

“Together along with the help of industry, we built a miniature version of a pipeline terminal,” said Ryan LeForce, Central Tech Industrial Coordinator. “It is equipped to mimic an actual terminal; it’s just small enough to fit in our building.”

The simulator allows student to learn in a controlled environment where they can transfer 40 barrels of fluid through more than 200 feet of pipeline between two storage tanks. In a separate room, students can operate valves and pumps to control pressure, temperature, transmitters, flow, and monitor tank levels.

OQ training provides employees the skills necessary to complete required operations, maintenance tasks, and the knowledge needed to react to emergencies or abnormal operation conditions. Central Tech provides training in more than 900 OQ modules that follows OQ requirements of practiced actions and testing.

In addition to learning operations of the pipeline industry and OQ training, Central Tech can incorporate the simulator into programmable logic controller (PLC) training.

A PLC is an industrial computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input and makes decisions based upon a custom program to control output. PLC training is one of Central Tech’s most requested technical training topics.

Nine local companies helped Central Tech create the pipeline simulator by offering experience, donations and time. Enbridge and Plains All American Pipeline, both past Central Tech Partners for Progress award recipients, donated equipment and countless hours to make the simulator a reality.

“Central Tech’s partnerships with industry-leading companies are integral to Central Tech’s success,” said LeForce. “Their willingness to share expertise, industry trends and ability communicate the needs of industry are paramount to what we do.”

Central Tech, part of the Oklahoma CareerTech system, tailors training programs, schedules, location and delivery to match the needs and requirements of each customer. Training can be held at the technology center or on-site at a business or industry. The programs prepare employees to operate new equipment, emerging technology, or to meet the changing demographics of the workforce.

To see the pipeline simulator, or learn how Central Tech Pipeline & Safety Training can help your company please visit the Pipeline and Safety Center on the Drumright campus during the 45 Open House on February 15, from 1-4pm.
