The weather on Monday, September 23 was perfect for a day on the links. The 7th annual Central Tech Foundation, Ron Vandever Memorial Golf Tournament, held at the Cushing Country Club, brought out 160 golfers to help raise money for the Central Tech foundation.

The tournament had a great response this year with 79 sponsors at the platinum, gold, silver and bronze levels. SpiritBank was the tournament sponsor again this year.

Through the tournament, the Central Tech Foundation raised more than $24,000, a record-breaking amount, to assist needy Central Tech students as they prepare for technical careers. Last year, the foundation was able to provide financial assistance to 54 students from 15 local communities.

The tournament had four flights of golfers with two winners from each flight.

In the A Flight, the Community Bank team of Matt Smith, Mike Legg, Don Sullivan and Tyler Sullivan won with a score of 53. Second place in the A Flight was Consolidated Oilwell, with teammates Joe Smith, Glen Rose, Brent Kerr and Jason Ward with a score of 55.

In the B Flight, the Easley Associates Architects team of Roy Easley, Matt Easley, Seth Benson and Kyle Kuykendall placed first with a score of 59. Tarr-Shaw placed 2nd after a tiebreaker with a score of 59 by team members Chuck Watson, Clay Greenwood, Ron Dyer and Charles Carroll.

In the C Flight, Team Enbridge and players Trent Wetmore, Hunter Ring, Jason Palmer and Vince Myers placed 1st with a score of 62. Second place in the C Flight was the Tedford Insurance team with Kent Burris, Wendell Bookout, Larry McBurnett and Greg Yeager – they also scored a 62 – but lost the tiebreaker.

In the D Flight, winners were DHS Class of ’72 Team 1, with members Kay Murphy, Don King, Mike Hester and Teri Shaffer with a score of 67. Second Place in the D Flight after a tiebreaker was Roberts Bus Center with teammates David Carney, Tobin Gump and Kevin Holba with a score of 67.

Winners of the Closest to the pin challenges on hole two were Tammy Wasson of the JLT Corp team and Travis Hill of the CareFusion Team 1. On hole 11, the winners of the closest to the pin challenge were Ashley Vandever of the Ron’s Duffers team and Joe Martin of the CG Martin Co. team.

The straight drive winners on hole 9 were Austin Elsey of the SpiritBank #2 team and Josey Spencer of the Sunoco team.

“The success of Central Tech’s foundation fundraiser helps many students stay in school and gain a career,” said Phil Waul, Central Tech’s superintendent. “Thank you to all of our sponsors and golfers.”
