Career Opportunities for Certified Nurse Aides

Have you thought about a career in long-term care or home health as a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)? If so, you have chosen a profession with a very secure future. By the year 2030, thirty-three million people will be senior citizens with one in five needing some type of long-term care. CNA is one of the fastest growing fields of employment.

Central Tech’s CNA program helps build a foundation towards a nursing career. Students learn how to provide hands-on care and how to perform routine tasks in long-term care facilities, hospitals and patients’ homes under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. Along with CNA, students have the opportunity to earn two state certifications: Long Term Care and Home Health Aide.

“The CNA program is a fast way to become trained, certified and employed,” said Patti Pouncil, Drumright Adult Career Development coordinator. “It is also required as a prerequisite to nearly all Oklahoma nursing programs.”

Students in the CNA program complete 120 hours of training, including extensive hands-on clinical work in an actual healthcare setting. After completion of the course, students can take a certification exam authorized by the Oklahoma State Department of Health to become certified to work in the healthcare industry.

Students can also choose to use CNA as the first step to advancing through healthcare education. The program gives students an excellent base of knowledge in medical terminology; human anatomy and patient care methods including CPR.

For more information about CNA, stop by the Adult Career Development Department at either the Drumright or Sapulpa campus during the annual Central Tech Open House on February 16, between 1-4pm.
