For Vincent Brinker, a second-year Construction Trades student at Central Tech and a student at Ripley High School, summer break was an opportunity to build more than structures. It was a chance to build real-world experience.
Through a connection with a friend, Brinker spent the summer working for Boylan Construction in Stillwater, where he gained hands-on experience on active job sites. His work included framing porches, patios, pergolas, and other residential projects.
Brinker said the skills he learned during his first year in Central Tech's Construction Trades class helped him contribute from day one.
"I used a lot of knowledge that I had cutting top plates, bottom plates, rafters and things like that," Brinker said. "Stuff that Mr. Van Sandt taught me."
The experience helped reinforce classroom instruction while introducing Brinker to the pace and expectations of the construction industry. While technical skills were important, he said one of the biggest lessons he learned was how to handle challenges and grow professionally.
"Developing tough skin will probably help me move forward the most in my career," he said.
As he begins his second year in the program, Brinker encourages other students interested in construction to stay focused and take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
"Focus and work hard," he said. "You just need to apply yourself, and you can get anything you want."
After graduating from high school, Brinker plans to continue working in the construction industry, building on the skills and experience he gained through Central Tech and his summer job.
At Central Tech, students like Brinker gain hands-on training that prepares them for success in the workforce. Through real-world experiences and industry connections, students develop the skills, confidence, and work ethic needed to take the next step toward a rewarding career.
