Prepare for a career in medical billing and insurance coding at Central Tech.

Interested in working in the medical field, but don’t like needles? A job as a medical billing and insurance coding specialist can provide you with a career in the medical field, but in the comfort of an office-setting.

Central Tech’s short-term adult education department on the Sapulpa campus offers a Medical Billing an Insurance Coding certificate program. In two semesters, you can be qualified to work as a medical billing and coding specialist in a variety of healthcare settings.

Medical coders are dedicated individuals who process claims away from the public’s eye in a private office, administrative building or billing department. Medical billing and coding specialists play a critical role in every healthcare organization by maintaining accurate records and protecting patient health information.

Mike Baugus, Adult Education Coordinator on the Sapulpa campus, said the program instructors work for St. John’s Hospital as managers, giving the classes relevance and credibility.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Oklahoma is an excellent state in which to pursue a career in medical billing and insurance coding. Many jobs are available at hospitals, insurance companies, doctor’s offices and through independent coding companies.

The career track starts with medical terminology, giving students the vocabulary needed to work in the medical field. The next four classes train the students for the skills they need to go to work, and upon successful completion, each student will receive a certificate of completion. After working for one year, students are eligible to take the CPC Certification Exam.

The average salary for medical billing and coding specialists in Oklahoma is $31,460, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
