This month, Central Tech honored the first completers of the adult Pharmacy Technician class. These students began this program in March of 2013 and finished in August, 2013. They were honored with a cake and punch reception on Wednesday, August 7th. Each student completed 165 hours of customized training, which included 30 hours of instruction in pharmacy-math concepts, calculations and conversions; 75 hours of instruction in drug classes and interactions, basic physiology, daily pharmacy operations and exam prep, and 60 hours or more of on-the-job training in an area pharmacy.

Due to the aging population, the demand for medications continues to exceed the need for trained and certified pharmacy technicians. Salaries may vary depending on location and work experience, but typically a technician will start in the range of $9 to $11 per hour. The program prepares students to take either of two national certification exams. The next Pharmacy Technician program is scheduled to begin on September 9th. Individuals interested in applying must have a high school diploma or GED, no prior drug convictions of any kind, normal or corrected vision and good eye-hand coordination.
